Incredible Key Master setup from Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings (1978), consisting of a hand-painted production cel placed over the screen matching hand painted production background. This setup is from the scene in which Bilbo asks Frodo to see the One Ring and his very memorable and hilarious reaction to it has been the stuff of memes. If a production cel of Frodo holding up the One Ring is not reason enough to make this piece priceless, also included is the matching hand painted background. The background is a Surrealist masterpiece featuring haunting rotoscoped figures lurking in the shadows that are barely noticeable when you watch the film. They are a metaphor for the horror that lurks about Frodo and his crew as they go forth to battle the evil that has engulfed Middle-earth. Rotoscoping is a film technique in which actual live images are traced and recolored to give a more realistic animation effect (This is the only background I have ever seen with rotoscoped images). With a single background made for every hundred or more cels, this piece is a truly rare 1/1 setup.Interest in LotR has been skyrocketing since Wizards of the Coast released a Magic the Gathering set with a LotR theme. The "1/1" One Ring from the set has a bounty on it that was last reported to be $2 million. And that is just for a printed card with ink that has barely dried! This is original art from the cult classic Lord of the Rings film by Ralph Bakshi and is 45 years old.
Setup measures 14" x 10" and is in excellent condition.
