🔥 Important Antique American Folk Art John Adams Thomas Jefferson Sampler, 1826:
$9500.00

This is an exceedingly rare, uncommon andHistoric Antique American Folk Art John Adams & Thomas Jefferson Sampler, comprised of primitivehand-loomed cotton, created by a young Phebe A. Jennings (1811 - 1838) of New Jersey in 1826, to commemorate the deaths of former American Presidents John Adams (1735 - 1826) & Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826,) which both occurred on July 4th, 1826. In all of my years buying, selling, and collecting American samplers, this particular piece left me awestruck and beside myself. Most samplers are rather mundane: (Name, year, location, Bible quote, etc....) BUT this sampler, served as a commemoration of the deaths of two former American presidents, mentions them in detail, and includes the fact that they died on Independence Day, 1826. It is a Holy Grail of American Folk Art samplers. This work reads: "Phebe A. Jennings...John Adams Aged 92 and Thomas Jefferson Aged 82 Years. Ex Presidents of the United States Died the Fourth of July 1826 on the fiftieth year of the Independence of America." WOW! Approximately 17 inches tall x 18 3/4 inches wide (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 9 1/2 x 12 inches. Good condition for nearly 200 years of age, with expected tears, edge wear, etc. Acquired from an old estate collection in Pasadena, California. Priced to Sell. Find another comparable to this one and show me it in a message...I'll be waiting. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. About the Deaths of John Adams & Thomas Jefferson:
Deaths of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson on July 4th
The deaths of former U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826–the day of the Jubilee–the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, was an extraordinary and eerie coincidence.Jefferson died shortly after noon at the age of 83 in Monticello, Virginia. Several hours later Adams died in Quincy, Massachusetts at the age of 90.Though thenation’s second and third presidents were friends at the time of their deaths, they had been politically estranged for eleven years after the presidential election of 1800. Jefferson, along with James Madison, formed the Democratic-Republican Party while Adams was a Federalist.Adams wrote a letter to Jeffersonon January 1, 1812, the first of many that renewed their friendship that lasted until their deaths. The last letter Jefferson wrote to Adams was on March 23.Thelast letter written byAdams to Jefferson was datedApril 17, 1826.The news did not travel fast during this time and the former presidents were not aware of each other’s deaths. Newspapers printed in the days immediately following their deaths included letters from Adams, Jefferson, and other surviving signers of the Declaration of Independence declining their attendance at the July 4th Jubilee celebration in Washington.
