Signed during the World War II era

Perfect Signature - Autograph Graded PSA Gem Mint 10

Wonderful content typed letter signed “A. Einstein” on a 8.5" x 11" letter dated May 18, 1938.

Einstein sent this letter to Dr. Lionel Ettlinger, a man with whom he had been corresponding for almost 20 years. This fine letter shows Einstein as a caring friend, a side of the famous physicist that was rarely seen by the public.

Written 2 months after his birthday (March 14), Einstein sends a thank you letter to Ettlinger for a gift, though he pokes fun at him for not having his birthday date correct in the original correspondence.

Freundlich grüsst Sie, Ihr, A. Einstein

Translated: "Dear Mr. Ettlinger: Thank you very much for the beautiful gift you sent me for what was supposed to be my birthday. It's strange that many people think that May 14th is my birthday. I'm sorry you haven't written anything to me about your well-being. Hopefully you have found your way in a satisfactory way. With best regards, A. Einstein"

Since 1933 when Hitler rose to power in Germany, they had shared a common concern for Jews, and each demonstrated the amazing difference which one person can make, Einstein began writing hundreds of letters to raise money on behalf of Jews. He primarily concentrated on these efforts from 1933 when he arrived in the United States until they entered World War II in 1941. His actions enabled many of his “people” to obtain visas and find work outside of NS territory.

Ettlinger would spend approximately 80 percent of his personal wealth helping German Jews relocate to other countries. At the time he composed this letter, Einstein was spending his evenings reading to his young sister, Maria(1881-1951), who had lived with him since escaping war-torn Europe in 1939. Known as Maja, she had suffered a stroke (1946) which left her bedridden and eventually unable to speak. She died on June 25, 1951, three month after her brother Albert sent this letter.

8.5 x 11" letter embossed with Princeton, NJ home address. Accompanied with famous photo of Einstein sticking his tongue out.
