ORIGINAL VINTAGE CIRCUS SIDESHOW / FREAK SHOW BANNER, FROG BABIES, SIGLER, 1950s:
$3500.00

What an incredible piece of circus memorabilia and sideshow history!! Think of the stories it could tell!Jack B. Sigler is a significanthistoric sideshow banner artist of the days past. He was a contemporary and studio mate to the more renowned and famous banner artist, Snap Wyatt, starting I believe in the 1940's, who worked in Chicago, then later moved and worked in Tampa Florida. This could also possibly be painted by Jack "Sailor" Cripe, who worked with Sigler Art Service, but fromstudying otherexamples, I believe it to be done by Jack Sigler. This banner depicts most likely a medical curiosity of two "Frog Babies", charminglynamed "Freddie andFrieda" sitting idyllically on lily pads in a cattail pond Environment witha fellow friendly frog. Thereis an ease to how they are all depicted, enduring and curious, seemingly lovable and approachable. The lettering is skillfully done in a type of sign painting that is really no longer seen in this current day and age.The attention grabbing bulletsread "Born Alive" and "No Neck" which give further intrigue and draw for the audiences viewing the banner while strolling down the Midway! This banner is also particularlyunique in that the border/framing color is bright blue! Most every other Sideshow banner I've seen has either a red or orange border. It is signed in the lower left section, "SIGLER, TAMPA". I am estimating this piece to date around the 1950's.Considering how this was once used and displayed in unpredictable conditions, combined with its age, it is in remarkablecondition! There are no rips or tears and the vinyl surface is still quite durable and strong. Surface dirt and some staining and scuffs are naturallypresent throughout but could be cleaned if desired (I personally like seeing the presence of these things as it is part of its history and give it character). 10 small nail holes run across the very top border and 12 along the lower section ten inches up for the bottom, which indicate how the banner must have been secured for display. All four corners have stitched, thick leather straps/harnesses where ropes would have been secured (please note that the upper right hand corner is missing itsmetal ring). The folds in the banner are from how its been kept in storage. They would most likely ease out once hung and displayed or with some pressing.
Measurements of the banner are 8' x 9'11" (96 x 119 inches)Please examine all pictures carefully! Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you may have..
Thanks so much for looking and good luck!
