Antique Victorian Mens Vanity Dressing Case w/ Silver & Cut Glass Toiletries Set
This is a Victorian era men’s wooden dressing case with brass fittings. The name plate on top says Charles Huffnagle. Dr. Charles Huffnagle was born in 1808 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died at age 52 in London, England. Huffnagle spent a lot of time overseas working with the East India Company and was a career officer in the Foreign Service. In 1857 he was appointed to the position of First Consul to British India. He is buried near his family home in New Hope, PA.
The case measures 13” x 9.5” x 6.75” when closed and has a brass strike plate for the locking mechanism that is marked “PATENT MORDAN & CO MAKERS LONDON”. We do not have the keys that accompany the case.
Upon opening the case, the inside lid is royal blue velvet. A slide button allows the inside of the lid to fold down, revealing a mirror, a writing surface and a green-lined folder for papers. Inside the case near the hinge is an area containing four cut glass bottles with sterling silver tops. The two on the outside are larger rectangular bottles with screw off silver lids and glass stoppers underneath. One has a handwritten label with “hair tonic” written on it in script. The left center bottle is cylindrical with a silver lid. The right center “bottle” has a friction fit silver lid engraved “W.M.” and a silver ring around an open bottom.
The section closer to the lock pulls out by gripping the two green ribbons to reveal a second storage compartment. This section contains a small travel inkwell with the S. MORDAN logo on the top in silver, a toothbrush case, a rectangular case (perhaps for a small comb?), a soap case, a rectangular case with a screw clamp lid (another ink well?), a perfume bottle engraved with the initials “EST” and a blue leather hinged box that is empty.
A drawer on the bottom slides out to reveal a mother of pearl handled nail kit (a file and two cuticle tools), a tiny pen knife with two blades, two pairs of scissors (one with a silver handle), an awl, a pair of tweezers, two button hooks and a folding boot hook. There are several items missing which are unknown.
NOTE: This case is in good condition, but there are some glass pieces with chips in the bottom and missing/incorrect pieces. We are selling it AS IS, so ask questions and view all of the photos before making an offer. Thank you.
