Charles M. Schulz maintained a life-long interest in hockey (he even built and owned a hockey rink in Santa Rosa, CA), and he was a longtime friend of Tommy Woodcock (the "Tom" on this drawing's inscription), a long-time NHL trainer who is in the Trainers' Wing of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Woodcock was involved with the NHL for 37 years and spent 17 years as the trainer for the St. Louis Blues.
Charles M. Schulz (1922 - 2000) grew up in Minneapolis, MN, a hockey hotbed, so his interest in hockey comes naturally. Schulz was already drawing cartoons in high school, and he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942, and he later was a part of the American march on Munich, and he helped to liberate the concentration camp at Dachau. After the war, he became a full-time cartoonist, and his comic strip Peanuts debuted in 1950. The pet dog Snoopy had, as one of his alter egos, the character of "The World Famous Hockey Player". From time to time, Snoopy would appear as a hockey player on his doghouse, or in the outside bathtub, or even as a hockey goalie and a coach.
