MONTBLANC for ASPREY(Double Signed) Meisterstück Solitaire18k Yellow GoldSet of Three writing instruments(#146 Fountain Pen w/ 14k Medium Nib, #164 Ballpoint Pen and #165 Mechanical Pencil) Bespoke Order w/ unprecedented Ostrich Leather pattern.

18K – 750 Medium Nib.

Late 1980s.

Let start saying that Asprey was established in England in Mitcham, Surrey, in 1781. Founded as a silk printing business by William Asprey, it soon became a luxury emporium. From its central London location (they had a dual entrance on two of the most desirable streets in Mayfair), Asprey advertised articles of exclusive design and high quality.
Asprey has developed over generations into the finest British jeweller and luxury goods house, and become a name synonimous with refinement and luxury.
For many years, Asprey was the ultimate gift shop in London, where one could buy all sorts of intriguing, exquisite goods.
A testament to their success, their customers included several generations of the British royal family and Indian Maharajahs. However, it was in the 1970s when Asprey of London really hit its heyday. With John R. Asprey at the helm, the retailer managed to attract a large number of Middle Eastern clientele who were starting to come to London to spend their newly acquired wealth, mostly generated from oil and associated industries. For this new clientele, the store continued to be the go-to destination to buy gifts to send back home.

In such context lies the story behing this elusive “special order” 3-pieces set.

It happens that a prominent figure close to the Omani Royal Family after entering the Asprey shop in Mayfair and having ordered all the available luggage, briefcases and accessories with Exotic Ostrich, he came up with the idea to apply for a demanding “bespoke” project which involved the creation of a 3-pieces Set (fountain pen, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil) in 18k yellow gold with a Ostrich pattern.

Being the concerned gentleman a long-standing client of Savile Row tailors he made it clear to the boutique manager that obvioulsy the pattern had to be engraved by hand.

Eight months later the set was ready to be delivered to the client’s utmost satisfaction.

The 18k hand-engraved Ostrich pattern covers the entire surface of the pen seamlessly from the ground up.

The traditional Montblanc cap band as well as the Montblanc emblem have been delibeately sacrificed in order to reach the purity of design.

A specific attention was dedicated to the design of the clips. The configuration chosen epitmomises Art Deco style with an additional stylised layer surmonted on the top of the clip which gives rise to a typically strong geometric shape.

Double Signature

A double-signed pen is one that features both the manufacturer’s name/logo – Montblanc in this case – as well as an additional brand, most often a specific retailer.

The phenomenon of double-signed pens came to exist in notable quantities in the 1980s, at a time when most would-be pen buyers made purchases not through brick-and-mortar boutiques owned and operated by manufacturers themselves, but rather through third-party retailers. Many consumers would recognise and trust certain retailers (such as Tiffany or Asprey) as much or even more than the brands themselves.

In recent years, Montblanc fully understood the potential of this synergy and started many "collaborations" with other established companies like Meissen, Aubrac, Purdey, Pirelli and Ferrari.

Double-signed pens have continued their rise in prominence as collectors and enthusiasts have grown to admire the unique qualities and ideas they represent.

For the sheer exclusivity in double-signed pens, the presence of a two signatures – particularly in 1980s pieces – provides an additional opportunity for emotional connection and intrigue for collectors.

The concerned Set has been gently used. The fountain pen has been previously inked. The filling mechanism works properly.

The importance of this Set cannot be underlined enough.

It is a unique, previously unknown and undocumented version of one of MB’s most iconic design.

There are pens that are grails and there are others that surpass grail status and enter the realm of quasi mythology due to their incredible rarity and importance.
