The dynasties that ruled ancient India constructed, renovated and maintained many temples dedicated to Hindu deities such as Shiva and Vishnu, as the many famous examples seen in the British Museum. Among the distinctive features are the voluptuous female figures decorating the roof struts. These sculptures typically comprise of an ornate tree canopy above a main figure flanked by attendants.
