The most-prized possession of the last reigning monarchofThe Kingdom of Hawai'i
Hawaii is a mess. The throwing away of this artifact is just one of the now countless major blunders by Hawaiian leadership. Some involvedhave been sent to prison, others are still serving in leadershippositions. Begs the question: Should this even go back to Hawaii? Clearly, they can't be trusted with their most valuedand treasuredartifacts.
Offered here is Queen Liliuokalani's music cabinet.
It was designed aroundthe two most historic moments of her life:herAloha 'Oeand herOverthrowby tower imprisonment.The interior of thecabinet is filled with her never-before-seen, handwritten musical notations.
~~~~~~
In Liliuokalani's memoirsshe tells a humorousstory about her adventures as the conductor of a traveling competitiveshow choir. And always losing to her younger brother's all-male choir. Thisself-deprecating yarn was no doubt one of her go-to stories to share at social gatherings. We believe she shared this light-hearted story with Queen Victoriawhenshe dined with her at Buckingham Palace in 1887. Queen Victoria's gift-of-choice to foreign leaders was custom-madefurniture i.e. The Resolute Desk.The evidencesuggeststhat Liliuokalani's cabinet was designed & crafted in 1899 in part, from informationgathered at that 1887 dinner party.While strictlyornamental, and with carry-handles on thesides,what we have here is a travelingchoir conductor's podium.
Design:Choir conductor 1860s-90s,Aloha 'Oe (composed on guitar in 1878), tower imprisonment1895, Kaiulani's death 1899.
From Buckingham Palace:
"We are aware of Queen Liliuokalani's Music Cabinet." "Many thanks for drawing this listingto our attention".
~~~~~~
A gift from Queen Victoria.This cabinetwas Liliuokalani's most-prized possession. When she passed away in 1917, Hawaii's competingroyal houses took possession of the cabinet and hide it. Why? It resurfaced 90 years later, when theCampbell Estate was dissolved in 2007.
~~~~~~
The day we found it, we knew that a terrible mistake had been made and the first thing we did was call the Honolulu Police Department and tried to return it. But our multipleattempts to return it were met with laughter. Iolani Palace, Washington Place, Bishop Musuem, etc, all laughed at the cabinet and, even after the discovery made headlines around the World, these *island institutions publiclydeclaredthat it had no connection to royalty. Iolani Palace continued to mock the cabinet on theirwebsite for a full year after discovery. And just last year, in 2022, Washington Place went further, declaring that under no circumstance would they accept the millions of dollars that the federal governmentis offering them.
*Incompetent: not qualifiedfor theposition a person holds.
After our attempts to return it failed, we reached out to The White House andHawaii-born, U.S. PresidentBarack Obama, by way of Senator Daniel Inouye, recognizedthe obvious and also tried to return it.Their attempts were also met with laughter. As you can see from the attached, most-recent letter from Congress, the federal government is well-aware of just how broken Hawaiian leadership is. Even still, they've not given up on theirefforts to see that thecabinet is returned to the people of Hawaii.
Queen Liliuokalani is under attack by the very people entrusted with keeping her legacy alive. Sheneeds a savior.
The discovery of the cabinet re-writes Hawaiian history, even World history. To start, for the last century, Kamehameha loyalists have been mocking the House of Kalakaua because Queen Victoria never formally recognized Liliuokalani with one of her coveted, custom-madepiecesof 'diplomatic furniture'. Turns out, Victoria went overboard with this one. A stunning piece of furniture!
But much more importantly: Whoever rules Hawaii rules the Pacific and whoever rules the Pacific rules the World.The United Kingdom wanted to continue its 500-year long reignof World domination,and The Kingdom of Hawaii wanted to avoid overthrow. So,Queen Victoria and Queen Liliuokalani devised a plan to seat a Europeanmonarch onthethrone of Iolani Palace as "Queen Victoria".But the monarch they chose, Princess Victoria from the Cleghorn's of Edinburgh, died. The young Scottish monarch was also known as"Hawaii's last hope" and"the peacock princess".
Aloha Oe means "farewell to thee".Crafted by a Scotsman just a few days after the young Scot's death, this Gift of Condolence is Queen Victoria telling Liliuokalani, "It's over". Their plan had failed.Their plan could be viewedas treasonous and, fearing for Liliuokalani's life, Victoria destroyed all correspondencebetween thetwo monarchs. Everything!
Liliuokalani was a Shakespeareanscholar. With all its hidden messages, the delivery of this cabinet wastheir lastcommunication.
Queen Victoria passed away shortly after delivery. Shortly after that, the United States ruled the World.
