This is a V-J Day Flag (Victory in Japan) which marked the end of the Pacific conflict with Japan during World War II, and therefore marked the end of the war. This Flag was designed then was approved by Roosevelt in 1944 to be flown at the end of the conflict in the Pacific. Many of these Flags were disposed of over time as a way to clean out clutter as this Flag was only flown in celebration of V-J day. We are so lucky to have found one!This Flag comes from a collection of vintage United States naval Flags that were found when cleaning out a mariner's home in Maine. These Flags belonged to him during his service! Each Flag from this set will have the same backstory, but we will provide the sizes for each Flag individually. Among the Flags is a rear admiral Flag, so we believe that was his rank within the US navy. Some of these Flags are stamped with a name, year, and naval base. Some are stamped with "Mare Island" which was the first US naval base established on the Pacific ocean. According to their stamps, the Flags range from about 1942-1945, so they are World War II era Flags. These are so interesting to take a look at! None of them are in "perfect" condition, they were each clearly used and are well worn Flags. They would look incredible hanging on the wall of a home! Each Flag is an incredible find, and would be perfect as a wall hanging, or just for the right collector who would like to hold a piece of world history in their hands.
