For your consideration, you are viewing an Antique Renaissance Dutch Fighting Knife / Long Parrying Dagger. The Renaissance marked the European cultural movement that began late in the 14th century and continued up until the 17th Century. This knife has a hand-beaten carbon steel blade, a cast iron guard, and a very solid cast bronze barley twist handle, that has been finished with a steel cone butt, the barley twist design allows a firm grip and is equipped with an unusual cast cross guard to protect the hand during use. This does not have its original sheath but it has been paired with a brand new hand-stitched cowhide brown leather sheath belt hanger, this sheath measures 39.5 cm / 15.55\" and on its own, it is valued at $68. The leather is strong and supple with all the stitching tight and intact, the snap button is tight, and overall is of excellent quality.

Knives are one of humanity\'s earliest weapons and were used for hunting, utility tools and self-defence. Knife fighting has a rich history that dates to ancient civilizations. The Grecians used a medieval dagger as a secondary weapon in hand-to-hand combat. The Romans also used a fighting knife as a weapon and developed a strategy of knife fighting known as Pugio, which was used by soldiers to defend themselves in close combat. During the Middle Ages, this combat style became more refined, with various schools and styles emerging. In Europe, the Medieval dagger was used as a weapon by knights. In the Renaissance, it became a popular weapon for duelling, and many schools of knife fighting emerged, each with its techniques and styles.

CONDITION:This Antique Dutch knife is Circa late 16th Century, Pre-Owned and it is in Good Condition for its advanced age and use. The hand-beaten steel blade is thick gauge and has rough edges on both sides with a dark naturally aged patination. The cast iron cross guard terminates with 3 splayed ends. The hilt handle consists of cast bronze in a barley twist and it is secured with steel butt pommel.The brown leather sheath is new and hand-stitched, and the leather is supple with all the stitching tight and intact. # Please note: The Photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos can show the finer details and conditions.

Australia Post does not offer a fragile service so items cannot be covered for damage in transit. I always add lots of extra weight to the postage cost to make sure your item is well packed making its journey to you intact. I use heavy-duty bubble wrap, newspaper and recycled boxes.
