1878 original Hand- Written Note by the two-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom - Benjamin D'Israeli. It comes framed with a Vanity Fair "Spy" Lithograph. For sale is an Original 1878 Vanity Fair "Spy" Lithograph Print: PM Benjamin Disraeli 1804-1881 with a letter from PM. Disraeli signed by him.
Condition: Consistent with age and use.Frame shows some minor wear. Print and letter show some aging and imperfections-- these are not considered flaws but instead part of the authenticity and patina.

Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield (b.1804-d.1881) was a British statesman and Conservative politician who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He played a central role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party, defining its policies and broad outreach. He served in office from February 20, 1874 to April 21, 1880.

His political career proved to be a tumultuous one. Controversial wars inAfghanistanandSouth Africaundermined his public support. These and other world events thereafter moved against the Conservatives. He angered British farmers by refusing to reinstitute the Corn Laws in response to poor harvests and cheap imported grain. With Gladstone conductinga massive speaking campaign, the Liberals defeated Disraeli's Conservatives atthe 1880 general election. In his final months, Disraeli led the Conservatives in Opposition.

In February of 1845, Disraeli made his famous speech in the House of Commons in which he attacked the then serving Prime Minister, Peel, for ignoring the wishes of theConservativeParty. A central impetus for the attacks were Peel's betrayal of the British Corn Laws that were active at the time. TheCorn Lawsweretariffsand othertrade restrictionson imported food andcornenforced in theUnited Kingdombetween 1815 and 1846. The wordcorninBritish Englishdenotes all cereal grains, includingwheat,oatsandbarley. They were designed to keep corn prices high to favor domestic producers, and represented Britishmercantilism.

Towards the end of his life, Disraeli developed debilitating asthma and gout, causing him to go out as little as possible for fear of more serious episodes of illness. In March, he fell ill with bronchitis, and emerged from bed only for a meeting with Salisbury and other Conservative leaders that same year. As it became clear that this might be his final sickness, friends and opponents alike came to call.Disraeli was nearly blind and close to death at the time he wrote this letter. He may be referring to the time he gave a speech in the House of Commons in 1845 when he famously attacked the then Prime Minister Peel.

Letter reads:

"March 6, 1881

My dear Sir,

I enclose you the order for the Ho: [House] of Commons, wh: [which] you wished, & I am, always,

Yours sincerely, Disraeli"
