Back to the good ol' days when food was nutritious. That's what Better Than Store Bought does for the reader. Too, it offers some interesting recipes that I've never heard of which makes it all the more interesting.

This is a book I had bought when it first appeared, and somehow lost track of it. I was very happy to find a copy of it again on ebay. Clear type, good directions, and very useful recipes characterize this book. It enables the user to make his or her own baking mixes, relishes, condiments and candies, among other foods. Particularly valuable to cooks who wish to economize, or to use more fresh and local ingredients. The Honey-Bran bread is so good that I make it as often as I can, rather than pay exorbitant prices for quality bread at the grocery.
I bought this book because I am very interested in preparing healthy food for my family and with making things from scratch you have more control over what you put in your food. I'm avid cookbook collector and enjoy reading cookbooks for fun. This book has wonderful tidbits about where the food came from and variations on how to prepare the recipes. It is a great book.
This is a great cookbook for quite a few odd recipes you won't find elsewhere. This is not the book for you if you are looking for a general cookbook with everyday recipes, however. The recipes included tell you how to make your own sausage, pickles, etc. Two recipes in this book that are definitely worthwhile are the pound cake and the "make your own" marshmallows from scratch.
I FIRST READ THIS BOOK IN THE MID 90'S AND COPPIED SEVERAL PAGES.IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1979 AND IS JUST AS GOOD TODAY AS IT WAS BACK THEN , MAYBE EVEN MORE SO WITH ALL THE FOOD ADDITIVES TODAY. IT IS CHOCK FULL OF RECIPIES TO MAKE ITEMS YOU FIND IN THE GROCERY STORE AT HOME WHILE BEING MORE HEALTHY. IT IS A FANTASTIC BOOK!!! WANT TO MAKE THE LITTLE BREAKFAST SAUSAGES? IT TELLS YOU HOW TO DO IT RIGHT ON PAGE 8, AND TELLS HOW TO MAKE THE LITTLE LINKS TOO. IT TELLS YOU HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN CRON CHIPE TOO. IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALERGIES SOME OF THE THINGS IN TODAYS FOOD WILL MAKE YOU VERY SICK, WITH THIS BOOK YOU CAN MAKE THE STUFF YOU CRAVE AND MAKE IT WHERE YOU CAN EAT IT, OF COURSE IT USES CORN SYRUP IN SOME OF THE RECIPIES, BUT WITH A LITTLE TRIAL AND ERROR YOU CAN ADJUST THOSE RECIPIES SO YOU CAN HAVE GREAT FOOD WITH NO PRESERVATIVES . I PURCHASED THIS BOOK AFTER A LONG SEARCH SO THAT MY GIRLFRIEND CAN HAVE FOOD LIKE THE REST OF US WITH OUT GETTING SICK.
