Presented is an antique dated 1906 Mardi Gras favor pin made by Gorham. Crafted of 14K gold, it depicts the “Masque of Comus” in hand-painted enamel. As pointed out by the inscription on the back, this celebrates Comus’s golden anniversary. The image on this pin incorporates grapes, which were the theme of the carnival queen’s glittering rhinestone jewels that year. Very few examples of this pin exist--there seems to be one in the Louisiana State Museum, illustrated in “Mardi Gras Treasures: Jewelry of the Golden Age”--but I could find no other museum or sales records of this piece, making it an exceptional addition to any advanced Mardi Gras collection.
